Using Course Listings

The main features of this application are available from the menu items listed after ‘Course Listings.’

By Semester

This Section allows you to search for courses whether logged in or logged out, the only difference being that when you are logged in with your WUSTL Key, you are able to favorite courses, and to add them to your Registration Worksheet.

This page has a few menu items: ListingSearchOpen CoursesClosed Courses, and Favorites

Listing

The Listing Section’s home page has search links in a Schools and a Departments section. Also, there are Semester links to the left allowing you to choose courses by semester. When you first arrive, there is a Getting Started section with instructions, a News section, a Tweets section and a Resources footer area.

  1. When the Semester links are clicked, the results will be filtered for courses in that semester only, and the Title for the Departments section changes by tagging it with the currently selected semester (i.e. Departments for Arts & Sciences – FL2013) The four most recent semesters are listed, and clicking the More link below them will toggle a scrollable select window with access to semesters as far back as fall 1996.
  1. Clicking the Schools section link will display departments available for each school in the Departments section to the right. The selected school is bolded. The default School for this section is Arts & Sciences, but if you have a WUSTL Key and you log in, the site will then remember your last School selection.
  2. The Departments links in the section on the right when selected will give you a list of courses available for that department below the Semester/Schools/Departments section. The selected department is bolded.
  3. Beneath the main window is a checkbox allowing you to Hide Independent Study and Internship sections. This is selected by default and must be unchecked in order to see independent study/internship courses.
  4. Once a department is selected, a list of courses based on your selected criteria display below under Search Results: with the default settings of displaying Open + Closed courses, and all in Regular view. Other views available are Condensed and Expanded which apply to all listed courses. It is also possible to see the Details of individual or multiply-selected courses, or to Hide them.
    1. In the Open/Closed Display: filter options section, you can also choose to filter to see Just Open or Just Closed courses.
    2. In all the views, you see the what is in the Condensed view, Course Name, the number of Units, and a Details link.
      1. In the Regular and Expanded views, each course description area has information regarding Sec(tions), DaysTimeBuilding/RoomInstructorFinal Exam (Date), # of Seats# currently Enroll(ed) and # of Waits. Also, when you mouse over a course area in these last two views, the whole section area darkens and the Actions: section has some links that reveal next to it, if they are available:
        1. The Books link takes you to a Campus Bookstore page in a new tab, listing the books needed for the course,
        2. These will display when logged in:
          1. The Syllabus link opens a new tab that may require logging in, that gives you access to another page containing, or displaying the course syllabus document,
          2. The Add RWS 1st, and Add RWS 2nd links, which display if you are logged in, allow you to add this course to your Registration Worksheet.
      2. In the Expanded view all courses also display showing all of the Details information.
    3. The Details link, when clicked expands the course’s view to show added details of the associated course:
      1. The School: and the Department: headings have links that open new tabs to the associated websites, and to the Registrar’s Policies website, and there’s a Description for the course.
      2. The Attributes: heading displays the specific attributes for the course with links for opening available modal popups that list the codes for that attribute type (i.e. A&S, A&S IQ).
      3. The other listed details have information and the Red links in the categories generally are also links that give you modal pop-ups listing codes, definitions and information to help you understand a lot more about the course itself.
      4. There is also a gray-outlined  star icon in the Details section where if you click it, it will become a yellow star  signifying that course selection as one of your Favorites, and this also will show up in your Favorites menu selection.

Search

The Search menu item allows you to have more control over the search process, being able to be as narrow or broad as you would like in your course search. The same rules apply to the Search Menu Section as to the Listing Menu Section noted in Listing’s item 5 above.

In this Menu Item you have 9 areas with criteria for searching.

  1. In the Semester: field, you can select any semester available.
  2. In the School: field, you select the desired School, which when selected causes the page to populate the Department: field’s list with the Departments associated with that School.
  3. Selecting the desired Department once the field populates will narrow your course search to that specific department.
  4. The Attributes: field is an optional selection that defaults to Any Attribute (broadest search). Selecting the down arrow reveals a list of attributes you can choose to narrow your search by, that are specific to each School, prefixed by that School’s abbreviation, (A&S)(AR)(BU)(EN)(FA)(MS), and (UC).

  6. Leave the Hide Independent Study and Internship sections in the results. option checked to keep them out of your results, or deselect it if you would like to search for them.
  7. The Days: section is self-explanatory for having control specifically of whether you want to see all days of the week, or to narrow your search to specific days, by selecting the days you want to either IncludeMatch Exactly, or to Exclude. All the days are selected by default.
  8. The Time: area lets you have the broadest time selection for your courses (Any Time), or to narrow the time to a specific time range desired.
    1. Morning selects courses that start and end before 12:00 Noon
    2. Afternoon gives you the option to view courses that start and stop from 12:00 Noon to 5:00 p.m.
    3. Evening gives you the option to view courses that start after 5:00 p.m.
    4. Clicking any combination lets you search for courses that might start in the morning, but run into the afternoon time, or go from afternoon into the evening time.
    5. Selecting the Starts: (on or after) and Ends: (at or before) options, you put in the time that you want a course to start by and to have ended by.
  9. The Units: option defaults to the broadest selection Any number of units, but allows you to narrow your search to:
    1. Fewer than 3 units, OR
    2. 3 or more units
  10. Once all your desired criteria is selected, you click the Search button.
  11. Selecting the Reset button resets everything to the default selection options except the School and Department selections.
